Actually, my D70 is quite INCONSISTENT in white balance and exposure (sometimes even in manual mode), it behaves more so when using with my 17-70mm kit lens.
I have used Nikon Capture extensively to adjust the color temperature and brightness. It's a great raw editing tool (like a typical old editing tool, it cannot be used to do more advanced stuff like rotating, cloning..) Besides, I can save my adjusted files back in the same NEF raw format knowing that the quality is fully preserved.
I've found that for Nikon, one may want to use Nikon's proprietary Raw editing tool (Nikon capture or Nikon Nx) to get the best color/brightness balance out of it. The color will not be as vibrant if one imports the file directly to Photoshop. Another thing I find out about my D70 is that it's more accurate to leave the white-balance in the "Sunny outdoor" setting in most conditions (even cloudy, indoor) as this setting will more likely give more accurate balance. It took me a while to realize that.
I am looking forward to getting the new D70x10 but am anxiously waiting to see what Canon will offer this coming Sept/Oct.... before jumping into the pool. Besides, I am investing heavily in Lottery hoping I can get a big win to fund my next camera.
I appreciate having been invited by you to this event. You have truly been a wonderful and kind leader.
Hope to join you in the next model shot.
