I've passed the info to my wife. We try to avoid having to change the plane due to the inconvenience/risk involved as the kid will be travelling alone.

Instead of direct flight from LA to Shanghai, it might be quite a bit cheaper if you fly from LA to Hong Kong or Taiwan, get off and stay for half day or one day, and then fly to SH.

James, thanks a lot my friend. My kid has never traveled alone, let alone staying one day in a foreign hotel....

网上买一般较贵的，找你当地的中介（要口碑好的），通常比直接在网上便宜好几百以上，因为他们有业务联系所以有折价优惠。而且回来的日子如无指定让他们帮你找最便宜的那一天。再有，找大学的学生或员工帮忙在校内订购也有优惠的（就不知现在放假了，还行不行）。

Thanks for all your help. I eventually had to pay $2150 for the round trip ticket.
She is now in China JiaoTong DaXue summer class and has been enjoying every moment of her time there while some free time visiting ShangHai and world expo there.

I guess it's an expansive but worthwhile trip.
