After covered most famous places within 500 miles (long weekend suitable), I'm at loss about this Memorial Day long weekend.

So any ideas, friends?

So far I have 3:
(a) Yosemite: the waterfalls are impressive and the valley green green
(b) Toronto: return airfare for nonstop has dropped to $339...activities? some nice state and national parks in Ontario
(c) Calgary (read as Banff): return airfare for nonstop has dropped to $315

Well if the airfare drops any further, it would get close enough to roadtrip gas cost, then...

Typically I'd prefer longer stay for places like Toronto or Calgary, but if the price is stupid enough, everything goes!

Yosemiste is almost hopeless! Memorial weekend is Yosemite's one of most popular weekend during the year, everywhere is people mountain people sea; and lodging is a big problem too, if you still haven't made any reservation, I doubt that you can get any rooms in that area.


No idea. Personally, don't like that place, very soso... and I think it's better to go within the fall timeframe to that area to see the fall foliage.


Calgary: the airticket is always not expensive; 4 days just not enough.

Calgary has a dilemma: Before June 22, a lot of places are not open yet; after June 22, lodging could be very expensive.

Yosemite is indeed hopeless if you want to stay inside the valley, unless you don't mind to try your luck with 1st come 1st serve camp sites (cold).

My actual Yosemite plan (not for Memorial Day) is:
Sat morning: start dead early & drive to Sequoia
Sat afternoon: Sequoia
Sat evening: drive to Fresno
Sun morning 1: getup dead early and drive to Glacier Point for sunrise
Sun morning 2: Yosemite Valley (regular weekend so no crowd)
Sun afternoon: Yosemite Valley
Sun evening: drive home (leave early results in stuck in #5 weekend traffic)

I'm still waiting for your answer to "so any ideas", as I got no clue!

I normally do Not reserve camp sites, but 2003 at Sequoia NP was the only time I got in desperate situation - we spent almost two hours to go from site to site. Every spot was filled (I do not mean reserved)! At the end we shared a spot with a stranger. That makes one of the excuses for my wife to hate camping. If you want to go early, go really early.
